How much does a 3D-printed crown cost?

The average weight of a dental crown depends on the material and the size of the tooth, but here are typical ranges:

  • Single posterior molar crown: approximately 1.2–2.0 grams
  • Single anterior crown: approximately 0.5–1.0 grams

Typical weights by material:

  • Lithium disilicate (e.g. IPS e.max): around 1.0–1.8 g
  • Zirconia: around 0.8–1.6 g
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): around 1.5–2.5 g
  • Full metal (gold alloy): often 2–4 g, depending on the alloy and the tooth being restored.

3D-printed ceramic-filled resin crowns (such as ceramic-filled dental resins), the cured crown is typically in the 0.8–1.5 g range.

For 3D-printed ceramic-filled resin crowns, an average finished crown (excluding supports and waste) is often around 1.0–1.3 g.

That means 250 g of resin could theoretically produce about 190–250 crowns.

In real-world production, you’ll also have:

  • Support structures
  • Raft/base
  • Resin left in the vat
  • Printing losses and occasional failed prints

If you’re printing multiple crowns together and optimizing support placement, you can get closer to the upper end of that range.

If you’re printing one or two crowns at a time, the extra supports and raft will reduce the yield.
